5th/6th field trip to burlington
The 5/6 team conquered Burlington. We began the day at the Flynn Theater, where we watched a play about the American Revolution, performed by an amazingly talented group from Chicago. After the show, we headed to Champlain College for an upbeat tour across campus. The students were excited to see dorms, academic departments, the library, and even the dining hall! We ended our day with lunch from Zachary's Pizza, Pasta and Fun!
Space Wonders...
What do you wonder?
power of positivity bulletin
At the end of our days, we have been focusing on the positive aspects of our time together. The students write the best part of their day on the post-its and put stick them to our classroom bulletin.

We are off to the lanpher library!
Color ten!
Today, the students did some game based learning which had them modeling fractions on hundreds grids, converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and adding/subtracting fractional quantities!
Oreo moon phases
Any day that you can eat your science project, is a good day. Here are our Oreo moon phases!
Moon phase clementines
Today, the students used clementines to represent our moon and flashlights to represent the sun. They were the earth and spun in slow, circular rotations to observe the many moon phases that can be seen every 28 days!
it's the holiday season!

Holiday fidgets
real context
If H.P.E.S. students earn THREE HUNDRED Hawk Hashtags in four days, we will celebrate with a spirt week beginning Monday! These fifth graders turned this situation into a real life problem to figure out how many hashtags each classroom will have to earn by Friday!
Now, that's excitement!
Number corner
Excitement ripped through the classroom this month when the students figured out they got to draw on the wall! This month's Number Corner's collection had the students measuring their height and foot length to the nearest halff inch! Is there a correlation between the two?! We will take the information gathered and create line plots and coordinate grids to solve the mystery!
Investigation Gallery Walk
After the completion of every investigation, the students rotate through the posters made by their classmates and make observations based on the different mathematical strategies used. On post-it notes, they write "I notice" statements for the partner group to later read.
Lanpher Library: wild readers
shadow clocks
During our Spaceship Earth science unit, the students are working towards solving a mystery: How did the first clock get set? We have been studying the path the sun appears to take as it moves across the sky and the shadows that stem from the placement of light. Shown below are the shadow clocks we created and how we tested them out both inside and outside, to discover what time it was based on the sun's position in the sky.
original Works fundraiser Art
We have teamed up with Mrs. Ramsey’s kindergarten class to raise money for the Lamoille Area Cancer Network! The proceeds from the Original Works, will be donated to LACN. Exploring great leads through published pieces
Spaceship Earth
Today, the students modeled their hypotheses for earth vs. sun rotations. They made sky viewers and had their partner sun demonstrate the sunrise and sunset from east to west.
Book Clubs
The students are participating in Book Clubs during literacy. They have common reading material and read corresponding chapters that they then discuss with each other. Their discussions range from character analysis to interesting and favorite parts!
Book boxes!
We finally have our individualized book boxes which consist of a variety of different texts!
Web of life
We've transitioned from discussing the food chain, to the web of life! Check out our Mold Terrariums and Web of Life demonstration below!
Mold terrariums
We have almost completed our Web of Life unit in science. This week's mystery experiment focuses on fungi and how different factors affect decomposition! Stay tuned for updated Mold Terrarium pictures as the week progresses.

Think About Volume and Mass!
Class Celebration
At the beginning of the week, our classroom had earned 102 Hawk Hashtags for "being ready to learn". On Monday, the students set a goal to reach 134 by Friday. That meant that every student, on average had the opportunity to earn 2 throughout the week. Well, they surpassed their goal and were able to earn 156 Hawk Hashtags! As a celebration for their dedication, we watched Charlie and the Chocolate Factory while eating dessert!

Today, two wonderful things were combined: brain breaks and challenges! The kiddos had to line themselves up from smallest to tallest without a single word. There was an abundance of hand signaling and laughing.
We have saved the tomatoes from our school garden and they will now live in our classroom until they have ripened! Once they're ready to eat, Ms. Donna in the kitchen, will prepare something delicious!
These writers are becoming more knowledgeable about the narrative craft by the day! The stamina that can be seen is beyond words and pages are filling up with small moments! Quote of the day: "I can't believe how full my Writer's Notebook is!" .... and it's only September!
Our classroom has some new flexible seating options!!

the field trip investigation
When given a real life problem, these mathematicians jumped right in to solve it! Their effort and teamwork exceeded my expectations. When one strategy didn't work properly, their perseverance allowed them to keep trying.
Eat or be eaten!
This week we have begun learning about the food chain! Today, these scientists experimented with making the largest food chain possible in teams of 3 or 4!
